Salem has made rapid strides in the field of education especially in the last 20 years. The government medical college called Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College that started in 1986. It is accredited by the MCI and in one year, there are 75 MBBS seats that are offered. The classes are conducted in the Medical College, located ten kilometers from the hospital. The hospital is being upgraded according to the model of the respectable All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) with a funding of Rs.120 crores from the assistance of Central Government.
The two universities in Salem are Periyar University at Omalur, established in 1997 and the Vinayaka Missions University, established in 2001. Vinayaka Missions University is the 48th best university in India. Did you know that Salem city has arguably, the oldest college in India, in the form of Government Arts College, built 170 years ago? The college initially was owned by the Salem Municipal Corporation and was then transferred to the Govt.of Madras in the years 1963-66. At that time, M.Gopal was the chairman of the Salem Municipality.

In the 1973-74, the Metallurgical Engineering branch was started and 11 years later, in the years 1985-86, the Electronics and Communications Branch was introduced. Computer Science Engineering Course was introduced in the year 2001. In the year 1997, the Periyar University came into existence. The colleges in Salem City, Dharmpauri, Nammakal and Krishnagiri are under the management and regulation of the Perivar University. Though most students still prefer to go to Coimbatore and Chennai to pursue engineering, Salem Engineering colleges are also finding quite a lot of takers now. All in all, Salem is known for its several engineering colleges, 2 medical colleges, 79 colleges, one ladies college known as Sri Saradha College for Women and two universities.
