No wonder, Salem is called the 'Mango City' because by now, the mangoes are being exported worldwide. There are plans to build a mango pulp factory near Salem to export conditioned mango pulp.
Natural resources in the form of magnesium are available aplenty; in fact magnesite deposits are the second largest in India, here. Big companies like TANMAC and Dalmia have sponsored mining here. Salem is also well-known for bauxite, steel plants, sago and lorry body building.
The production of 'vellam' or unbleached sugar is one of the biggest cottage industries in Salem. The other famous cottage industry is rope making. People in Salem are big-time cinema lovers and the district has the biggest number of cinema houses and theaters, that are perhaps bigger in number than any other district in India.
